Ragnarok Online adalah sebuah MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) dari Korea Selatan yang dibuat berdasarkan cerita dan latar belakang yang sama dari komik korea terkenal berjudul "Ragnarok" yang ditulis oleh Lee Myoung-Jin.

Komik ini kemudian dikembangkan menjadi sebuah game online yang memfokuskan fitur komunitas antar pemainnya. Game ini dibuat oleh Gravity Corporation. Pada hari Rabu, selalu diadakan maintenace minggu yang mana client RO selalu diperbarui setiap saat untuk menambah kenyamanan bermain serta menambahkan hal-hal, barang, kota-kota baru, maupun event tertentu.

Hampir seluruh versi resmi (official) RO sudah memasuki masa komersil di mana pemain harus membayar untuk bermain (pay-to-play). Perlu dibedakan, terdapat pula private server yang merupakan server tidak official (ilegal) dan tidak ada toleransi dari Gravity serta penyelenggara RO di seluruh belahan dunia.

Dalam permainan ini, yang berlatar di dunia Rune Midgard, tidak ada jalan cerita sehingga pemain bebas melakukan apa yang diinginkan, walaupun ada beberapa cerita sampingan atau quest yang dibuat oleh pengembang game. Sistem tanpa cerita ini membuat pemain sangat leluasa. Walaupun demikian, seperti pada umumnya game MMORPG, pada umumnya yang dikejar oleh pemain adalah kenaikan level (atau lebih dikenal dengan istilah leveling) sampai level maximal, dalam Ragnarok Online yang resmi, batas maximal adalah 99.

Level pemain dalam RO terbagi 2, base level dan job level. Base level adalah level karakter seseorang yang berpengaruh pada statusnya sedangkan job level memengaruhi kemampuan profesi karakter pemain. Status karakter ada 6 macam yaitu STR (Strength), INT (Intelligence), DEX (Dexterity), LUK (Luck), VIT (Vitality), AGI (Agility) dan pemain bebas menaikkan status yang ia mau.

Kenaikan level (level up) dapat dicapai dengan cara membunuh monster-monster yang tersebar di berbagai tempat, lazimnya ada 2 tipe tempat, yang paling mudah dikenali adalah tempat yang "tertutup" atau lebih sering disebut sebagai dungeon dan tempat terbuka. Membunuh monster memberi pemain 2 macam experience (exp) point, yang dihitung ke base level dan job level. Apabila karakter sudah mengumpulkan exp yang cukup maka level karakter akan naik.

Sistem ekonomi RO dijalankan dengan mata uang Zeny dan berjalan sesuai dengan hukum pasar, terutama oleh penjualan barang-barang langka yang tidak bisa ditemukan di toko yang berputar di kalangan pemain berlevel tinggi.

Dalam RO, pemain akan memulai permainan sebagai novice dan setelah mencapai Basic Skill (Kemampuan Dasar) level 9 pada job level 10 maka pemain memiliki pilihan untuk melanjutkan ke salah satu di antara 6 profesi lanjutan atau tetap menjadi novice yang dikenal juga sebagai Super Novice. Setelah job 1, tersedia job 2. Pemain minimal job 1 dengan job level 40 baru bisa berubah menjadi job 2. Dan untuk job 3, pemain harus job 2 dengan base level 99 dan job level 50 untuk transcended/rebirth serta biaya 1.285.000 zeny. Tempat berubah ada di Kastil Sage di kota Yuno. Update Terbaru dari RO adanya job 4 yang diimplementasikan pada renewal server.

Pada beberapa server memiliki perbedaan nama / sebutan untuk beberapa job, namun pada dasarnya yang dimaksud adalah sama, contohnya MasterSmith dan WhiteSmith.

• Prontera, Ibu kota Kerajaan Rune-Midgard yang terletak di tengah peta. Merupakan tempat berubah menjadi Acolyte, Priest, Knight, dan Crusader/Defender. Prontera adalah kota yang menyediakan tempat untuk menikah (di gereja Prontera). Di timur laut Prontera terdapat St. Capitolina Abbey, yang berlokasi tidak jauh dari Prontera (timur-utara-timur-timur). Di sini terdapat sebuah kuil yang terletak di dalam hutan dan merupakan tempat untuk berubah menjadi profesi Monk.

• Geffen, kota para penyihir yang terletak di bagian barat Prontera. Merupakan tempat untuk berubah menjadi profesi Magiciandan Wizard. Di tengah kota terdapat Menara Geffen. Kota ini tidak termasuk sebagai area yang bisa dipilih untuk PVP.

• Izlude, kota satelit Prontera tempat berubah menjadi Swordsman. Di kota Izlude terdapat satu-satunya bandara yang menghubungkan Kerajaan Rune-Midgard dengan Republik Schwarzwald. Karena ukurannya yang relatif kecil, tempat ini sering dijadikan tempat untuk nongkrong di PVP. Di tempat ini pula disediakan arena, di arena para pemain dapat mencoba kekuatannya melawan monster-monster yang sesuai dengan level pemain. Arena terletak di arah jam 12 kota Izlude.

• Morroc, Sebuah kota di tengah padang pasir yang bernuansa Timur Tengah. Morroc terletak di sebelah barat Prontera. Desain kota Morroc diilhami oleh negara Mesir. Merupakan tempat untuk berubah menjadi profesi Thief (di Piramid), Assassin (di sebelah tenggara Morroc) dan Rogue (di pulau mercusuar sebelah barat daya Morroc). Sejak episode 10.3, Morroc juga merupakan tempat untuk berubah menjadi profesi Soul-Linker. Pada episode 12, dikisahkan Setan Morroc yang disegel di pusat kota Morroc akan bangkit, sehingga kota ini akan hancur berantakan menjadi sebuah kota mati. Beberapa gurun di sekitar Morroc akan dipenuhi oleh monster boss level tinggi, termasuk Setan Morroc sendiri yang merupakan MVP Boss.

• Payon, kota yang bersuasana Korea. Payon terletak di tengah hutan Payon, sebelah tenggara dari Prontera. Pada April 2005, server idRO menambahkan patch New Payon yang merupakan rekonstruksi kota Payon menjadi lebih besar dari sebelumnya. Kota Payon merupakan tempat untuk berubah menjadi profesi TaeKwon dan TaeKwon Master. Di bagian utara Payon terdapat desa kecil yang biasa disebut Desa Archer, Desa Archer merupakan tempat berubah menjadi profesi Archer dan terdapat sebuah gua di sini. Di sebelah timur Payon terdapat hutan yang sangat lebat yang juga merupakan tempat perkumpulan profesiHunter sebelum akhirnya di pindah ke kota Hugel.

• Alberta, kota pelabuhan di selatan Payon tempat berubah menjadi Merchant. Di kota Alberta terdapat pelabuhan yang merupakan satu-satunya cara mencapai ke beberapa kota baru. Kota-kota baru itu antara lain, Amatsu, Gonryun, Louyang, dan Ayothaya. Pemain membutuhkan 1.000 zeny untuk dapat mencapai kota-kota tersebut melalui NPC yang berada di arah jam 3 kota Alberta. Khusus untuk novice yang ingin menuju Amatsu, dapat menggunakan warp gratis yang disediakan oleh perkumpulan Ninja, NPC warp tersebut dapat ditemukan di sekitar arah jam 8 kota Alberta.

• Al de Baran, Al de Baran adalah kota bernuansa Eropa yang terletak di utara Prontera, Di kota ini terdapat tempat untuk berubah menjadi Alchemist dan Super Novice. Di tengah kota Al de Baran terdapat sebuah menara jam. Al de Baran bisa dicapai dengan menggunakan jasa warp dari Geffen dan Izlude. Di dekat Al de Baran, pemain juga dapat menemukan kantor Kafra Pusat (arah jam 10), di tempat ini pemain dapat menukarkan poin spesial (yang didapat dengan menggunakan layanan teleport / storage kafra).

Salah satu daya tarik utama dari game Ragnarok Online adalah War of Emperium (WOE). War of Emperium adalah perang antar guild di kerajaan Rune-Midgard untuk memperebutkan beberapa istana yang tersebar di kota Prontera, Payon, Geffen, dan Al de Baran. Untuk bisa berpartisipasi dalam WOE, karakter harus memiliki sebuah guild terlebih dahulu. Untuk membentuk sebuah guild, seorang pemain membutuhkan sebuah item langka yang bernama Emperium. Emperium sendiri adalah nama dari sebuah batu mulia di dunia Rune-Midgard yang dikatakan bisa memberikan kekuatan dan kekuasaan bagi siapapun yang memilikinya.Jadwal WOE (Ragnarok Online Indonesia)

MVP atau singkatan dari Most Valuable Player adalah semacam sebutan bagi pemain yang bisa mengalahkan beberapa monster tertentu. Monster ini tidak seperti monster lainnya yang keluar setiap saat. Monster khusus ini biasanya keluar 1 hingga 2 jam tergantung jenis monsternya. Monster MVP ini juga dapat menjatuhkan barang yang langka dan mahal sehingga banyak diminati oleh pemain-pemain RO.

Kota di RO bebas dikunjungi seluruh pemain baik dengan cara berjalan dari kota ke kota ataupun menggunakan jasa warp oleh Kafradengan membayarnya ataupun dengan bantuan dari pemain lain yang berprofesi Acolyte, Priest, Monk dan Super Novice.

Pada episode 10.x di-implementasikan sistem baru selain menggunakan Kafra, yaitu Airship dan Kereta Api. Sistem ini menggantikan fungsi teleport pada Kafra untuk kota kota "baru" (Rute Juno, Lighthalzen, Einbroch, dan Hugel)

• Gonryun, di beberapa versi RO disebut juga Kunlun, merupakan kota yang didasarkan pada suasana dan budaya Taiwan danHong Kong. Gonryun bisa dicapai dengan menggunakan kapal laut dari pelabuhan Alberta.

• Jawaii, Pulau Kasih Sayang. Pulau ini hanya bisa dicapai oleh pasangan yang sudah menikah saja. Di pulau ini bisa dibeli sebuah item yang bila digunakan akan mengubah baju karakter pemain menjadi baju pengantin untuk beberapa menit. Pulau Jawaii memiliki nuansa tropis khas Hawaii.

• Louyang, Kota Legenda Naga, sebuah kota bernuansa Kekaisaran Tiongkok tempo dulu.

• Lutie, kota natal yang hanya bisa ditempuh lewat Al de Baran. Terdapat sebuah pabrik mainan di sini.

• Niflheim, Kota Kematian. Nifleheim merupakan sebuah kota hantu. Memiliki tema sebagai kota para orang mati, cukup merepotkan untuk menuju ke sini karena hanya bisa dicapai dengan berjalan kaki dari Umbala. Atau apabila ingin cepat, bisa menggunakan bungee-jumping di air terjun yang berada di desa Umbala, namun akan mengakibatkan risiko kematian bila gagal (tidak mengakibatkan turunnya 5% experience). Dan kalaupun sukses, anda akan berada di Niffelheim dengan hanya 1 HP tersisa.

• Umbala, Sebuah desa terpencil di tengah hutan yang terletak di sebelah barat kota Morroc. Penduduk Umbala memiliki bahasa tersendiri yang bisa dipelajari oleh karakter dengan menyelesaikan sebuah quest. Republik Schwarzwald

• Einbroch, Kota Einbroch dikelilingi daerah berbukit yang sedikit akan tanaman. Area yang merupakan daerah penuh pertambangan. Pabrik kosong dan bekas penambangan banyak ditemukan di daerah sekitar Einbroch. Guild Blacksmith danGunslinger terletak di kota ini. Di Einbroch juga terdapat jalur kereta api yang menghubungkan Einbroch dengan Einbech.Einbech adalah kota satelit Einbroch. • Hugel, Hugel adalah nama sebuah desa di pedalaman Republik Schwarzwald yang tenang dan memiliki banyak permainan seperti Bingo. Hugel terletak di sebelah timur laut Juno. Sejak episode 10.4, Hugel juga menjadi markas baru bagi perkumpulanHunter.

• Juno, Kota ini ditambahkan pada peta Rune-Midgard sekitar bulan Juli 2004 saat update Episode 5. Juno adalah Ibu kota Republik Schwartzwald dan merupakan tempat untuk berubah menjadi seorang Sage. Juno terletak di sebelah barat laut Al de Baran. Di Juno terdapat buku dan jantung Ymir yang diperlukan kalau ingin berubah menjadi Profesi Advanced (Job Transcended/Rebirth).

• Lighthalzen, Lighthalzen merupakan suatu kota yang berada di antara pegunungan tinggi. Kota ini mempunyai teknologi yang cukup tinggi dan perekonomian kota yang tinggi. Kota ini mendapatkan sebutan kota kebahagiaan. Semua tempat di kota ini dibangun dengan indah dan berseni. Kota Lighthalzen terletak di sebelah barat Al de Baran dan bisa dicapai dengan menggunakan balon udara dari Juno.
